Romantic comedy (romcom) is a comedy and slice-of-life fiction that focuses on lighter, amusing narrative lines focused on ideological concepts, such as how real love can overcome most hardships. It is a lighthearted film, play, or television program about a happy love tale. Couples hunt for romantic movies to watch all year, not just around Valentine’s Day. It’s never the wrong time to hunt for the finest romantic comedies on Amazon Prime Video, no matter what time of year it is.
Best romantic comedies on Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime Video has a large selection of romantic comedies that includes anything from classics to contemporary love stories. Here are a few recommendations.
The Big Sick (2017)
Directed by: Michael Showalter
Written by: Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani
Starring: Kumail Najiani, Holly Hunter, Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano, Anupam Kher, Zenobia Shroff, Bo Burnham, Aidy Bryant
The real-life love story of Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon serves as the basis for The Big Sick, the most entertaining romantic comedy in years. It’s the strange-than-fiction story of two individuals falling in love despite competing cultures, familial expectations, and a life-threatening mystery sickness, directed by Michael Showalter.
The plot revolves around a stand-up comedian who falls in love with a woman who mocks him at a show. He tries to keep the connection hidden from his parents, who want a completely traditional planned marriage to a Muslim lady. Still, their romance is complicated when she goes into an unexplainable coma and he bonds with her mom and dad. The Big Sick, brimming with heart and sincere goodwill, is a hilarious and entertaining study of love, devotion, and family, as well as a sure crowd-pleaser.
Crazy Rich Asn (2019)
Directed by: Jon M. Chu
Written by: Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim
Starring: Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Henry Golding, Lisa Lu, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh.
Rachel (Constance Wu) joins her boyfriend in a packed Manhattan bar in New York City after teaching her economics class, much like thousands of other New Yorkers on any nightly basis. But she has no notion that they are not your average pair. Nick (Henry Golding), her boyfriend of roughly a year, is the heir of one of Singapore’s largest real estate businesses.
He conceals his wealth until they fly to Singapore for his closest friend’s wedding. She is transported into a modern-day “Cinderella” scenario, with her prince upgraded to a businessman. Crazy Rich Asians is a big-budget saga with locations, clothes, and styles to die for. It is also a breakthrough piece of cinema with an all-Asian Starring.
What If? (2013)
Directed by: Michael Dowse
Written by: Elan Mastai
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Driver, Zoe Kazan, Mackenzie Davis, Megan Park
You will find it hard to find two more pleasant, agreeable performers than Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan and this 2013 romantic comedy. What If is every bit the feel-good, easy-to-watch love story you’d expect. The film offers a fascinating, though ultimately predictable, twist on the genre. It features Radcliffe as Wallace, a young guy burnt out by several disastrous relationships who strikes up an immediate bond and unmistakable chemistry with Chantry (Kazan), who happens to live with her long-standing partner.
They work together to find out what it implies to be best friends with someone who may also be your soulmate. And they do it with a fantastic supporting Starring led by Adam Driver and Mackenzie Davis, who play a demonstrative, passionate pair who can’t keep their hands off of one another, providing a comic foil to Wallace and Chantry’s abstinent love. It’s a classic fee because it’s amusing, sweet, and intelligent.
Notting Hill (1999)
Directed by: Roger Michell
Written by: Richard Curtis
Starring: Julia Roberts, Rhys Ifans, Hugh Grant, Emma Chambers, Gina McKee, Tim McInnerny, and Hugh Bonneville.
Of course, when we see Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant together and on screen, we want them just being together already. Still, this romantic comedy Notting Hill is about postponing the inevitable. They do, after all, exist in two separate universes. Her character, Anna, is one of the world’s most recognized movie actresses. William, Grant’s character, owns a tiny small travel book business in London. We know they’re meant to be together, but we’re always faster to recognize it than the protagonists are.
Notting Hill reunites three important characters from another fantastic romantic comedy film, “Four Weddings And A Funeral” (1994). Grant fell in love with a gorgeous American (Andie MacDowell) in the last film, which happened this time. And in both films, the romantic pair is surrounded by a vast, lively collection of strange but lovable characters.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
Directed by: Ian Samuels
Written by: Lev Grossman
Starring: Kathryn Newton, Kyle Allen, Jermaine Harris, and Anna Mikami
There must be something ironic about a film concerning time loops and repeating certain events, effectively repeating identical emotional beats that this sci-fi genre has already addressed. If everything is cyclical, it stands to reason that these narratives are as well! The Map of Tiny Perfect Things occurs in one of those adorable tiny American towns where the main street is lined with friendly stores. And everything is blandly pleasing. It’s so pleasant that high school student Mark (Kyle Allen) doesn’t mind replaying the same 24 hours for 1000 days of life.
The film recognizes its pop-culture inspirations. It appreciates the effect that Harold Ramis and Terry Gilliam’s masterpieces have on its YA plot. That doesn’t make the picture very original, but it does make The Map of Tiny Perfect Things genuine.
