Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, Netflix has announced season 2 of its original fantasy drama Shadow and Bone. The news didn’t come as surprising since the world showered the show and Grishaverse with love and appreciation.
According to the statistics, Shadow and Bone have been watched by 55 million families globally within the first 28 days. What’s more, the fantasy drama has made it to the streamer’s Top 10 list in 93 countries worldwide. It has been at No. 1 position in 79 countries, including the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Germany, Russia, Spain, and South Africa. Netflix and showrunner Eric Heisserer aren’t done with the Grishaverse yet.
Shocker: Shadow and Bone is being compared to Game of Thrones!
Well, not a shocker at all. Many Shadow and Bone fans have been comparing the show with Game of Thrones. It’s not surprising since both the shows have a wealth of written material drawn for future seasons. Adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone draws fans to the universe of Ravka, where there are element-manipulating powers, a region of tangible darkness called the Shadow Fold filled with monsters, saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes, and privateers. But there’s so much more, similar to Game of Thrones.
Elated by the news of renewal, author and executive producer Leigh Bardugo said, “I’ve been writing in the Grishaverse for nearly 10 years now. I’m thrilled that we get to keep this adventure going. There are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit”. Sharing the same emotions, showrunner Eric Heisserer commented, “I’m honored and thrilled to return to the Grishaverse and continue the stories of these endearing characters, particularly Milo.”

What Was Shadow and Bone season 1 about?

Shadow and Bone season 1 follow Alina Starkov, an ordinary mapmaker, who suddenly discovers that she has a rare power to summon sunlight, which could destroy the Shadow Fold and save countless people. Soon she gets ensnared by the lavish world of royalty as she starts training with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite. Its notorious leader, commander General Kirigan takes a special interest in her power.
Season 1 ends with Alina absorbing the stag amplifier and using her light to guide Mal, Kaz, Inej, Jesper, and Zoya out of the Fold. Meanwhile, Kirigan, who faced off against Mal (Archie Renaux) before being swept up by one of the monsters he created, was last seen leading his army of nichevo’ya (shadow monsters) outside of the Fold, hinting that this is only the beginning.

What Would Happen in Season 2?
Season 1 of Shadow and Bone was a faithful adaptation of the novel. Therefore, season 2 is likely to cover the second book, Siege and Storm. Showrunner Heisserer has hinted at an interview with TV Line that he has big plans for Season 2, like further exploring a budding romance between Alina and Mal. His words were, “I believe there is a lot of kissing in their future, should we ever get the opportunity.”
Heisserer is also planning to bring in additional major characters like Wylan, a member of the Crows, and Nikolai, the son of Ravkan king Alexander III, and to revisit the Crows in Ketterdam.
Ben Barnes, who plays the Darkling, told Collider, “He’s many folds more powerful, now that he has the walking, living volcra that he can summon and send at his will, without even having to use his hands to use magic”. All in all, season 2 will be jam-packed with action, magic, romance, and drama.
When would season 2 of Shadow and Bone be released?
Unfortunately, there will be a long wait for season 2. The show’s season 1 was shot in Budapest, Hungary, logistically a huge endeavor even before the Pandemic. As a result, shadow and Bone season 2 will probably be released in late 2022 or early 2023.
